  •  Washington, DC, July 15, 2009 – The Adaptation Fund Board Secretariat is pleased to announce that Andrew M. Wee, a resident of Cebu City, Philippines, has won the contest to create a new logo for the Fund.  As explained by the designer, the logo is “composed of a sprouting plant which forms the acronym ‘AF,’ symbolizes the ‘necessary hope’ that the Adaptation Fund helps provide.   This growing plant likewise represents a ‘green’ fund as well as the need to nurture it.”

     

  • Durban, South Africa, December 15, 2011 – The number of National Implementing Entities (NIEs) eligible for direct access to the Adaptation Fund rose to eight following the Adaptation Fund Board’s 16th meeting, held December 12-14, 2011 in Durban, South Africa. At the meeting, the Board accredited the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC) of Jordan and Ministry of Natural Resources (MINIRENA) of Rwanda as NIEs. These accreditation decisions bring the count of NIEs to eight, including is the first for the Middle East and fourth for the African region. In addition, the Board also accredited the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Multilateral Implementing Entity (MIE), making the entity the Board’s tenth MIE.

  • Durban, South Africa, December 5, 2011 - The Adaptation Fund at the climate change conference featured case studies from five of its National Implementing Entities (NIEs) at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at its side event on November 30th.

  • Bonn, Germany, September 16, 2011 – The Adaptation Fund Board reaffirmed its commitment to the operationalization of the direct access finance modality with the accreditation of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) of Belize as a National Implementing Entity (NIE). This accreditation decision brings the count of NIEs to six, and is the first for Central America. In addition, the Board also accredited the African Development Bank as a Multilateral Implementing Entity (MIE), making the entity the Board’s ninth MIE.

  • Bonn, Germany, September 8, 2011 -  This week the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) accredited the South African National Institute for Biodiversity (SANBI) as a National Implementing Entity (NIE). SANBI, created in 2004, works closely with national climate change policy makers, and has led national initiatives relating to climate change adaptation. SANBI also works with a wide range of climate change adaptation groups internationally, and with many universities and research institutions around the world.
     
  • Bonn, June 22, 2011 - The Adaptation Fund Board has decided to accredit the National Environment Fund (FNE) of Benin as the fourth National Implementing Entity and the West African Development Bank (BOAD) as the first Regional Implementing Entity, hence reinforcing the direct access modality it is promoting. The Board has also approved grant funding for concrete climate change adaptation projects from three Asian developing countries, with total value of US$ 17.4 Million.
  • Bonn, March 18, 2011 - The Adaptation Fund Board approved grant funding for three concrete climate change adaptation projects from three developing countries, with total value of US$ 19.5 Million. The countries represent three regions: Africa, Pacific Islands and South America.
     
  • Bonn, Germany, February 9, 2011 - The only global climate change fund established under the Kyoto Protocol became an independent international legal entity after the German Government enacted the Act of Parliament last week.
     
  • Washington DC, January 28, 2011: The Government of Sweden made a contribution of SEK 100 million (Euros 11 million approx) to the Adaptation Fund Trust Fund.

  • Washington DC, January 27, 2011 - The Adaptation Fund Board secretariat has posted on its website five project proposals for Uruguay (direct access), Ecuador, Eritrea, Solomon Islands and Tanzania. The relevant section of the Adaptation Fund website allows civil society representatives and other interested stakeholders to provide comments on the merits and impacts of the proposals. Local communities and organizations close to the areas where the proposals are expected to be executed are especially encouraged to send their comments to the secretariat.
     
  • Joal and Washington DC, January 24, 2011 - The Kyoto Protocol’s Adaptation Fund took a decisive step in becoming fully operational on Friday, January 21 through the kick-off of its first direct access project “Adaptation to Coastal Erosion in Vulnerable Areas” in Senegal. The project, with a budget of US$ 8,619,000, focuses on protecting coastline from the harmful effects of sea level rise. It is the first project to use the Adaptation Fund’s groundbreaking direct access financing mechanism, through which developing countries can access the resources from the fund directly, without the intermediation of multilateral development institutions. Direct access is a unique feature evolved by the Adaptation Fund Board and unprecedented for an environmental financial mechanism.
  • Cancun, Mexico, December 15, 2010  -  the Adaptation Fund Board which concluded its twelfth session in Cancun back to back with the United Nations Climate Change Conference  approved funding for two projects in Nicaragua and Pakistan and five concepts from the Cook Islands, Ecuador, El Salvador, Georgia, and the Maldives for financing at its next session. The Board had earlier approved projects from Senegal and Honduras.
     
  • Cancun, Mexico, December 7, 2010  - Today in Cancun on the sidelines of the COP 16 climate change summit the Government of Germany, represented by its Vice Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Ms. Gudrun Kopp, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Adaptation Fund Board, represented by its Chair, Farrukh Iqbal Khan, to confer legal capacity on the Adaptation Fund Board. This act enables the Adaptation Fund Board to enter into contracts with recipients and legally perform its duties under German Law. Formal finalization of that MoU according to German legal requirements is expected by the end of this year.
  • Washington DC, November 12, 2010 - Senegal officials signed on Thursday a memorandum of understanding for the first project to be funded by the Adaptation Fund, established to assist developing countries adjust to the effects of climate change. Developing countries can access the resources from the fund directly, without the intermediation of multilateral development institutions, which is a unique feature evolved by the Adaptation Fund Board and an unprecedented one for an environmental financial mechanism.   • Mexico City, November 5, 2010 - The Chair of the Adaptation Fund Board, Mr. Farrukh Iqbal Khan (Pakistan) and the Secretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of Mexico, Ambassador Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo, signed a letter agreement on the hosting of the 12th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board, to be held in Cancun from December 13 – 15, 2010.

  • Bonn, September 17, 2010 – The Adaptation Fund Board approved for funding two projects from developing countries worth US$ 14 Million. One of the two projects, awarded to Senegalese National Implementing Entity Centre de Suivi Ecologique (CSE), utilizes the ground-breaking direct access modality. The project aims at combating coastal erosion exacerbated by climate change and rising sea levels in Senegal.

  • Washington DC, June 24, 2010 – The Adaptation Fund Board took another major step forward when it approved the first four proposals of concrete adaptation projects in its meeting on June 14-16 in Bonn, Germany including one by Centre de Suivi Ecologique, a national implementing entity from Senegal.

  • Washington, April 29, 2010 – Spain has become the first country to make a significant contribution of 45 million Euros (ca USD 60 million) to the Adaptation Fund. This contribution will help the ground-breaking facility set up under the Kyoto Protocol to finance climate change adaptation projects and programs in developing countries.

  • Washington, April 8, 2010 – A new page was turned today in the global effort to help developing countries to adapt to climate change, as the Adaptation Fund issued its first call for project and program proposals.

  •  Washington, DC ,  April 15, 2009 - The 5th meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board (AFB) successfully concluded on March 27 2009 in Bonn. During the 5th Meeting, the Board has been able to complete its deliberations on the operational policies and guidelines for parties to access resources from the Adaptation Fund. It will take a final decision on these operational policies and guidelines before calling for funding proposal in the near future.

  • Washington, DC, July 6, 2009 -  The Adaptation Fund Board met for the Sixth time in Bonn, at the UNCCD headquarters, on June 15 to 17, 2009, and was informed about the first sales of CERs on behalf of the Fund.

  • Bonn, November 18, 2009 – The Adaptation Fund Board has decided to accept the offer of Germany to confer legal capacity and to host the Board. Legal capacity will allow the Adaptation Fund Board to have a long-term solution to disburse funds in its function to assist developing countries in adapting to climate change.

  • Bonn, March 25, 2010 – As a decisive step forward towards the implementation of its mandate, especially the ground breaking direct access modality, the Adaptation Fund Board decided to start financing concrete climate change adaptation projects and issued call to parties to submit project proposals at its 9th meeting on March 23-25 in Bonn, Germany.

  •  Washington, DC , May 27, 2009 – The Adaptation Fund completed its inaugural sales of certified emission reductions (CERs) during the third week of May, 2009. This was the first set of transactions carried out as part of the Adaptation Fund’s program to monetize CERs. 

The Adaptation Fund is designed to finance concrete climate change adaptation projects and programs based on the needs, views and priorities of developing country parties to the Kyoto Protocol.

  •  Washington, DC , June 15, 2009 – The World Bank as Trustee for the Adaptation Fund completed the second sale of certified emission reductions (CERs) during the second week of June, 2009. This was the second set of transactions carried out as part of the World Bank’s program to monetize CERs for the Adaptation Fund.
