Climate change is increasingly contributing to rising global temperatures, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and increasing floods, droughts and storm intensity. It is worsening food and water security, exacerbating health risks, while endangering lives, livelihoods, protective ecosystems and ways of life.
The Adaptation Fund finances – through grants – concrete, localized projects and programmes that help the most vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt and build resilience to climate change. It supports those that are often the most at risk, but least prepared to respond to climate change.
Projects are country-led, highly inclusive and tailored to local adaptation needs. They encompass a wide range of adaptation sectors, including food security, water management, sustainable agriculture, coastal zone management, disaster risk reduction, urban and rural development, and forests.
The Fund has proven to be highly relevant, efficient, effective and innovative. It pioneered Direct Access, a climate finance modality that empowers developing countries to build their own adaptive capacities while accessing funds and designing projects directly with the Fund through accredited nationally-based institutions.
It has established new innovations and adaptation models while sharing valuable lessons and experiences so that its work can be replicated or scaled up. Since 2010, its programmes have helped vulnerable communities improve lives and livelihoods including through 84 concrete projects in developing countries throughout the globe with 6 million direct beneficiaries.
To help meet record trends in demand for adaptation project financing over the past few years, the Fund conducts ongoing resource mobilization activities.
