Ex post: Belize Marine Conservation and Climate Adaptation Initiative
In Belize, coastal communities and marine ecosystems are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including sea-level rise, stronger storm surges, coral reef degradation, and increasing pressures on marine resources that support local livelihoods and the tourism sector. This ex post evaluation assesses how project outcomes have evolved several years after completion, with a focus on whether ecosystem-based adaptation measures and efforts to strengthen community resilience have delivered sustained adaptation benefits over time.
This USD 6 million Adaptation Fund-supported project focused on strengthening the climate resilience of the Belize Barrier Reef System through ecosystem-based marine conservation and climate adaptation measures. The project supported the expansion and improved management of marine protected areas, promoted sustainable alternative livelihoods for reef-dependent communities, and strengthened local capacity and awareness to support the long-term resilience of coastal ecosystems and communities. The project was implemented by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) in partnership with the Government of Belize, with fiduciary management support from the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT).
