Ex post: AYNINACUY Strengthening the livelihoods of vulnerable highland communities in the provinces of Arequipa, Caylloma, Condesuyos, Castilla and La Union in the Region of Arequipa, Peru

In the high Andean provinces of southern Peru, climate change has intensified long-standing environmental stresses, including droughts, frost events, water scarcity, and ecosystem degradation. These impacts have affected the livelihoods of vulnerable rural communities that depend largely on alpaca husbandry and other Andean camelid production. This ex post evaluation examines the extent to which project-supported adaptation measures have been sustained since project completion and whether they continue to strengthen resilience to climate-related risks.

The USD 2.9 million AYNINACUY project sought to reduce vulnerability and enhance the adaptive capacity of highland communities across five provinces in the Arequipa region. Supported by the Adaptation Fund, the project promoted climate-resilient livelihood strategies, strengthened local and institutional capacities for climate risk management, and supported measures to increase ecosystem resilience. The project was implemented by Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), and executed by Peru’s Special Project COPASA.
