Profonanpe: Developing Innovative Adaptation Measures in Peru

By Alberto Paniagua, Executive Director, Peruvian Trust Fund for National Parks and Protected Areas (PROFONANPE)

Back in 2014 the Adaptation Fund accredited Profonanpe as a National Implementation Entity under the Fund’s pioneering Direct Access modality, and thus contributed to enhance Peru’s national capacity to adapt to climate change.

The Fund’s ongoing support and focus have made it possible for Profonanpe to join a select community of implementing entities that meet annually to share their experiences, successes and  lessons that they have learned about the accreditation process and designing and implementing the projects funded by the Adaptation Fund in individual nations.

Climate change is having an ever increasing impact globally, resulting in a series of large scale climate events that cause wide ranging losses, including forest fires resulting from higher temperatures, more intense rainfall, and landslides. These are but a few examples of disasters that affect local and world economies.

The Adaptation Fund has continuously demonstrated its interest in supporting countries to strengthen their capacities for building resilience and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Thanks to funding for the project, “Adaptation to the Impacts of Climate Change on the Coastal Marine Ecosystem of Peru and its Fisheries”, the Government of Peru has the opportunity to put into practice innovative adaptation measures to mitigate the vulnerability of Peruvian coastal communities to the impacts of climate change on coastal marine ecosystems and their fisheries. Likewise, through the Adaptation Fund’s Readiness Programme for Climate Finance, Profonanpe continues to improve its institutional capacities, especially in the application of social, environmental and gender safeguards across its programs and projects.

Profonanpe congratulates the Adaptation Fund for all its achievements in these 10 years and thanks it for the support provided to develop better and innovative adaptation practices, thus strengthening the resilience of communities and ecosystems. The Adaptation Fund’s efforts to get nations around the world to work together with a horizontal and transparent approach has been extremely valuable and encourages us all to continue working together with such a major organization.
